Before anyone spends a fortnight agonising over these two brands, here is the fact that reframes the whole exercise: they belong to the same company. Quick-Step is a Unilin brand, Pergo has been part of Mohawk since 2013, and Unilin lists both of them side by side among its own floor brands.

What this means for you is practical rather than cynical. You are not choosing between a good company and a bad one, so stop reading brand reviews and start reading specification sheets. The differences that will affect your life are in the product, not the badge.
Engineered wood against laminate, honestly
The real comparison is between two constructions, and each one is better at something the other cannot do.
What engineered parquet gives you
Quick-Step parquet is made of real wood, with a hardwood wear layer bonded onto a stable core so it moves far less than solid boards. You get the grain, the warmth underfoot and the depth that no printed decor quite reproduces, and you get the thing that matters most over decades: a floor that can be sanded and refinished rather than replaced. Quick-Step covers its ranges with a lifetime residential guarantee against wear and fading, and installation uses its Uniclic click system rather than glue.
The cost is money and vulnerability. Real wood dents when you drop a pan on it and scratches when a chair leg drags, and both of those show more on wood than on laminate.
What laminate gives you
A laminate plank is a high-density fibreboard core, a photographic decor layer and a transparent wear layer of hardened resin. That top layer is why laminate outlasts wood on scratch resistance and why it costs less. The trade is absolute: when it is damaged, there is nothing underneath to sand back to. You lift the affected planks and slot in replacements, which is straightforward on a click floor and impossible if the range has been discontinued. Buy a spare pack and keep it in the cellar.

AC classes, or how to read a laminate pack in ten seconds
If you go the laminate route, this is the only number worth memorising. AC stands for abrasion class, it is set by the European standard EN 13329, and it runs from AC1 to AC6 based on a Taber test in which a rotating abrasive wheel grinds at the surface until the wear layer gives way.
In rough terms, AC3 covers ordinary domestic use, AC4 is the sensible default for a busy household and light commercial rooms, and AC5 and above belong in shops and public buildings. The lower classes are effectively obsolete.
One caveat that sellers rarely volunteer: the AC class measures surface abrasion and nothing else. It says nothing about impact resistance, nothing about how the joints hold up, and nothing at all about moisture. A high AC number on a floor with weak locking is still a floor with weak locking.
Damp, sun and old stone: the local part of the decision
Three conditions matter more here than in the brochures, which are written for a generic European home.
Humidity in old coastal buildings. A stone or old concrete ground floor near the sea can push moisture up into anything laid on it. Whatever you buy, that means a vapour barrier and, if there is any doubt at all, a moisture reading of the subfloor before the first plank goes down. Wet rooms. Neither real wood nor standard laminate belongs in a bathroom. Both catalogues now include ranges with declared water resistance, so read the specific range’s rating instead of assuming, and treat a kitchen as a room where spills happen rather than a dry room that occasionally gets wet.
Sunlight. South-facing rooms behind large windows fade wood, and they fade it unevenly wherever a rug sits. Laminate’s printed decor holds its colour better under strong light, which on this coast is a genuine argument and not a footnote.

So which one would I lay?
In a flat that gets rented out in summer, or a family home with a dog and small children, laminate at AC4 with a decent acoustic underlay. It takes the abuse, it costs less, and nobody cries over a scratch.
In a place I intended to keep for twenty years, and in the rooms I actually live in, engineered parquet. It is the only one of the two that gets better after a bad decade, because it can be taken back to bare wood and started again. That single property is worth the price gap, and it is the reason the two materials have never really replaced one another.
